The gobiid Chasmichthys Group includes two genera found in the western North Pacific and another six genera found in the eastern North Pacific along the coast of North America. Within the Chasmichthys Group, the taxonomy of the genus Chaenogobius Gill, 1859, has been unclear for over a century, at least partially due to the apparent absence of a type specimen for its type species, Chaenogobius annularis Gill.
