Title Section of Spillway Bucket

Description This shows a section of the spillway bucket before backfilling along the lower lip. The bottom of the bucket is at elevation 869.88, and the top of the lower lip at elevation 900. Since three contraction joints occurred in the curved portion of the bucket, the radius was not kept constant at 50 feet, but varied from 50.00 from the first section, 50.125 for the second, and 50.25 for the third, thus allowing a slight drop at each contraction joint to prevent cavitation from the high velocity...
Sixty-five Bureau of Reclamation designers spent 18 months studying 75 combinations for the construction of the spillway bucket. Using models they determined that circular flow tubes and a short curve-bucket type of dam would best fit the conditions at the Grand Coulee Dam site.
