Description Significant physical differences between glaciated mountain headwaters and lowland or unglaciated catchments suggest the need for monitoring parameters appropriate to these basins. A conceptual framework based on recent research in the North Cascade Mountains, USA, offers landscape-derived spatial hierarchies that can be used for process based ecological monitoring.
